John English

The Flat Top Crew congratulates John English on his overwhelming victory in the Queensland State Election, on Saturday, 17th February 2001.

John English was the Australian Labor Party's endorsed candidate for the seat of Redlands, which is a bayside electorate, to the east of Brisbane and includes some of the islands of Moreton Bay.

John easily defeated the sitting National Party member, getting 48.55% of the primary vote.

The Premier of Queensland, Peter Beattie, when announcing John's endorsement as Labor candidate for Redlands, made the following statement, "John, is a 38 year old sergeant in the Ethical Standards Command of the Queensland Police Service who is ideally placed to serve the people of  Redlands."

"He is a former electrical fitter / mechanic, former Queensland State Gymnastics Coach, racing driver and father of a young daughter."

"John is a solid performer who represents the new generation of candidates I am looking for to fight long and hard for all Queenslanders who are looking for a fair go."

"He lives at Victoria Point and knows the area very well."

"After finishing high school at grade 11 he began work with the South East Queensland Electrical Board as an apprentice electrical fitter / mechanic and gained his trade certificate in 1983."

"As a teenager he raced motorcycles and also found time to become an internationally-accredited gymnastics judge and a nationally accredited gymnastics coach. He went on to become the Queensland State Coach."

"He returned to full-time study and obtained a Bachelor of Human Movement Studies degree at the University of Queensland."

"After working as a research assistant at the university he became a locum rehabilitation counsellor with the Workers Compensation Board of Queensland before joining the Police Service in 1988."

"He is a married man with a 23 month old daughter."

"John currently races a Formula Vee race car and has raced at Lakeside and Bathurst."
